Our Policy and Objectives
WARCI is one of the oldest Clubs in Australia. It was created in 1986 when people could legally keep rabbits again (yes they were illegal for a number of years before that!). It is based in Perth (WA) but has members from across the State.
WARCI aims to promote, educate and encourage responsible rabbit ownership and rabbit exhibition particularly in Western Australia. We place a huge emphasis on educating members of the public, pet owners and Club members about the responsible care of rabbits. We strongly discourage people from breeding just for the 'pet market' as we recognise that there are already far too many bunnies out there that need rehoming. Our members are expected to advertise responsibly and to ensure that rabbits are sold to a loving home.
WARCI has a 70 page Information booklet that we ask our members to sell to new owners. This booklet has all the information the new owner may need to know to ensure their rabbit remains happy and healthy. WARCI has also established an "Accredited Member" Scheme where members that have been members of the Club for at least a year, shown regularly and have exhibited good knowledge of the breeds they own and responsible rabbit care are allowed to advertise as such in any adverts they do.
Responsible Rabbit Ownership
WARCI also has an excellent website with lots of information about breeds of rabbits, care and health of rabbits.
Once a year WARCI holds a Pet Information Day with displays of breeds, hutches, grooming and feeding plus plenty of advice and information. On these days we also offer greatly subsidised vaccinations for RCD.
Exhibiting Rabbits
WARCI holds a rabbit show every month from March to December. There are no shows in January and February as it is too hot. The shows are usually held on a Sunday and it is often the third Sunday of every month.
The shows are almost always held at Cyril Jackson Rec Hall, Fisher St, Ashfield (Bassendean) except for the Agricultural shows. Booking in for rabbits is from 8.30am and visitors are welcome from 10am to 3pm. Entry is a gold coin donation.
WARCI offers classes at shows for our Junior Members. There are two Junior age groups - from 4 to 13 years and 18 years and under. This enables the Junior Members to compete against each other and they can win rosettes and end of year trophies. It is an excellent way for young people to learn about their rabbits, how to care for them and groom them, and exhibit them successfully.Showing as Junior teaches the young people to be responsible for the care and health of their rabbits. It amazing how quickly they become interested in the complex area of genetics when they are planning their breeding programs.
Other Benefits
Being a member of a rabbit Club instantly makes you part of a Club of like minded people who share your passion for bunnies as pets. If you are interested in exhibiting it allows you to breed to improve the rabbit breed you are interested in. Also as many rabbit breeds in Australia are quite rare you can help maintain gene pools. We are a friendly Club that offers a number of social activities throughout the year - as well as the monthly shows!! A great family activity! WARCI has a great website and facebook page plus a members only fb page which keeps you informed to all members with great rabbit articles, Club news and show results.
